To run the educational programs even on new hardware and on old ones, i
would propose not to choose kde or gnome. XFCE or LXDE would be a better
choice i think. But it's only my point of view.

As you mentioned, we don't need to decide that now. At first we need the
programs than we can decide to create a live-cd out of it.
