The following GNOME3 packages seem to have gotten installed in spite of 
--keep:
   gnome-icon-theme
   gnome-menus
   gnome-session
   gnome-terminal
   lib64gnomekbd7
   lib64gnomekbd-common

So it looks like the only way to recover is to go forward with GNOME3.
