Other distros (eg: fedora) have done the switch long time ago.
Both projects are more or less dead (which is somewhat expected for projects
implementing an API dead for a decade)

FC has patches for the examples & for killing warnings though.

We would need to test GLUT a little bit

As for gallium, I'm regularly testing r300 from git but I'ven't tested
neither r600 nor nouveau (though my experience with nouveau on FC
is that it regress quite a lot and is heavily dependant on the
kernel/libdrm/mesa triplet).

r300g is alreay the default in incoming mesa-7.11 (I think
this was already the case on 7.10).
r600g will be the default in 7.12
No bugs are accepted on r300c anymore (don't remember for r600c)
As for nouveau, well we've no alternatives.
As for swrast, the LLVM gallium driver is said to be faster but
I'ven't tested it.
