Spot on !  That was it.

This is a fresh install as of a couple of days ago, using the free ATI 
driver + nonfree firmware.  Is anyone aware of a change to issue xset 
+dpms ?  Cos I certainly didn't do it.

Thanks for figuring this out.  It was driving me batty.
