To give a bit of context, the bug was already open against Mandriva:

Mageia simply inherited Mandriva's policy:
https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3348

The reason you might not hear much about python-virtualenv users is
that:

1. they are likely to have already fixed their system as I did (i.e.,
   remove the PYTHONDONTWRITEBYTECODE setting);

2. they are likely to fetch the upstream virtualenv, since it's a
   trivial package to install.
