Okay,

I had time this morning to go over this.  I started out with a urpmi 
--auto --auto-select --auto-update

After it pulled down an additional 115 packages,I reboot.

I plugged in the LaserJet P1006 and and the printer loaded it's 
firmware, got the following log entries:
