A good habit to cultivate, which can save untold heartache and labour!

Basically this is the right approach, IMO. However, most often such
problems are caused by configuration not by data or applications, so
I'd try renaming ~/.kde4/share/config before doing anything else. If
that works, identify configurations that are important to you and not
quick to regenerate, and start to copy them over. *BUT*, copy only
one item at a time, testing thoroughly before adding something else.
The configuration that has caused your problem should then become
obvious and the rest can be restored if necessary.
