Reinout, no answers but I need to be able to suspend my laptop from
the user menu, otherwise (if I simply close the lid) it drains the
battery. Suspend is no longer an option from the user menu... Power
Off expects me to type in the root password and then just logs me out.
Once in GDM I have the option (again) of powering off or suspending,
both of which hang the laptop in Console 1 and permit me only to
return to the GDM login prompt in Console 2. Maybe this is related to
your problem.
