squid is an excellent caching proxy server.
When you activate a proxy server, make sure it is Not available from the internet.

I remember a friends little brother was impressed once, for about 2 minutes, after we activated squid as a transparent proxy at their house, when a "speedometer" test site reported their 1.5Mbit ADSL line to have 100Mbit speed. :-)=
