Hmm - the reason I thought I would have to is that attempting ifdown
brings up a message that it is controlled by NM and therefore the
command is ignored (can't remember the exact wording).  I temporarily
took it out of NM and put it back when I'd finished.

Anyway, thanks to the hints here, I realised that I didn't have a
configuration file for eth0:temp, so I created one based on the eth0
one, and it worked perfectly.

Back to trying to figure out the various server options :-)
