I like it. (I wouldn't make flavour optional, although it does
make for awful long filenames if you spell them right out.)

Just a little swerve:

I thought of two subsets of each release: the version (LiveCD, USB,
Network Install, whatever) and the
{type|variety|model|configuration|style|branch} - I didn't go as far
as you in packing/parsing information from the names of installables
- but I think mine can stretch and meet yours in the middle (if you
will excuse my metaphors, which have gotten out and are trashing
the room).

I'm thinking about names that can also be comfortable people whose
grasp of the term "architecture" is tenuous, even before we
abbreviate it. 8-)

So, could we maybe make architecture into model; flavour into style;
support into media, tag into type; and maybe we could split the
current style into style and {region|language}... so:

mageia-1-live-kde-europa-cd-beta1-i586.iso

name, version, type, style, region, media, status, model...? 

This is a *lot* of information for a newbie to parse.
