Yes, that's what I call a iptables tricks. 

But since that's not packaged, a easier way would be to add 2 tables,
and to direct packaet using simple jump, and to just count packet there
using traditional iptables packet counting. Or using ipacct ( easier to
package IMHO than a iptables addon ).
