well, i haven't used windows in 8 years, so i can't account for that, but if
there are 2 different icons next to hardware, and the one looks like an X, i
assume it's because it's broken. perhaps something more obvious could be
chosen:

a small dot for something normal and a green arrow pointing east for one which
has a separate configuration. or you could use the same arrow and gray it out
or something.
