It's all the build options Marja. Source based distros allow you to
configure build flags however you like so you can enable certain things
or disable others you don't use. The packages are then built when they
are installed rather than being pre-built on the repository with some
default build options.

Some people prefer the level of granular control it gives them. It's a
trade-off though. Some say it makes their system faster or it uses less
memory etc but it can also be a bit of a faff to configure.

I wasn't aware freebsd was like that though. Horses for courses.

It's a shame to see him go, he was doing fantastic work on bugzilla and
seems a nice guy too. Wish him luck :)
