I didn't make any changes. But could be that it was automatically picked
up due to modules detecting systemd... only thinking of that now.

For Mageia 2, my thought was to not enable the systemd support.

Could you compile gnome-settings-daemon locally with an explicit
with_systemd=no added to configure?

As said in the bug, seems to work for me.
