BTW, boot.iso is huge.
Most of it is the two kernels flavors (desktop & server) and their modules
for storage, network, ...

The rationale for having 2 alternatives was to have a fallback when main kernel
failes to handle the hardware.

Eg by kernel*2.4.x times, we had kernel-BOOT-2.4.x as main kernel
(== main flavor debloated/reduced down) and a kernel-2.2.x as
alternative.
Thus if the newer 2.4.x branch failed to handle a machine,
odds were that old 2.2.x would success.

Later we provide an older kernel, eg 2.6.11-6mdk-i586-up-1GB,
2.6.11-6mdkBOOT & 2.6.8.1-12mdkBOOT).

But now we use the same codebase for both alternatives.
The only difference is that we use two flavors, regular/desktop
and server.

At least on x86_64, I fail to see how the small difference between
these two flavors can help any machine.

I suggest we drop the kernel-server alternative at least on x86_64
in order to save half boot.iso size (less of course on the tainted one)
as well as saving 20m for packages on CDs & DVDs.

And maybe on i586 too...

WDYT?
