That's the wrong way to use gdb. You should do:
$ gdb /usr/bin/perl
$ run /usr/bin/net_applet
Also look into gdb's --command flag for start up commands.

Whitespace in Python is not a problem: just lay out all the whitespace first,
then add the code around it.
