This is purely informational - hoping that someone searching archives
will find it useful.

Cauldron had recently been incredibly slow at bootup - 17 minutes to
get to a functional desktop.  It is now back to the normal time for
the netbook, between 1 and 2 minutes.  Only two things have changed.
I assume the first one is the relevant one, but for the sake of
completeness:

My problems with wireless connection are cured.  The way to tackle
this is found in
https://www.mageia.org/pipermail/mageia-dev/2012-November/020237.html

I removed some of the no-longer-used kernels, using MCC.  I do not
expect this to be relevant, but it was done before I rebooted.
