I installed it because it was necessary for cinelerra (It is marked as
mandatory component in the configure).
But indeed the text on the main page is kind of not very appealing.
Chosen extracts:

I'll check later on the cinelerra mailing list if they ever plan to
change this dependency or if they is a way to install cinelerra
without faad. If not, I guess Mageia will never have it. That explains
why it seems that cinelerra is in PLF for Mandriva.
