One small detail I forgot to mention: initially I assigned 1GB of memory
to the virtual machine (https://www.mageia.org/en/support/ says 512MB
minimum, 2GB recommended), no swap, and eventually urpmi started giving
strange errors.
Next time I gave 3GB, just to be on the safe side.
I suppose that 2GB should be enough.
