So for my understanding, typing firefox at the command line in an xterm
causes it to open and then close right away on your desktop? Is anything
shown in the console when this happens?

-------------------------------------
If I type "firefox" at the command line, firefox opens and closes quickly,
and the following two lines appear:

failed to create drawable
trace/breakpoint trap
-------------------------------
What desktop environment do you use, and can you let us know how you
changed the "application open style"? Please give detailed instructions as
I'm unfamiliar with this terminology, though perhaps it sounds more
familiar to one of the other readers here.

--------------------------------
I"m using KDE, whatever was the default installation with whatever Mageia
updates were made.

My posing the question as usual brings more questions to mind and exploring
again possible answers etc.

What I apparently did was to change from "classic menu style" to
"application launcher style." I now can switch back and forth, and in
addition have been able to change the right click on the desktop to the
original, which had changed and had not mentioned before. But the launch
problem persists.

In addition, by switching user to xguest, everything works ok.

Thanks

That should be doable.
