Hmmm. All I see with a search of the Mageia 1 non-free repositories is
the 173.14.30 driver. Where is the 173.14.31 version?

I had a "testing" install of Mageia 1 on my computer from several months
ago. I updated everything - 252 packages! - and then told MCC I was
using an FX card so the 173 driver would be installed. It appears to be
the 173.14.30 version, which installed without removing the 275
nvidia-current driver. Then I used MCC to remove what appeared to be
left of the 275 driver, so it couldn't somehow mask the working of the
173 driver.

The problem described still shows, but much more briefly - probably
because this computer is much faster than my brother's.
