May have found the problem. :-)

While I've only seen general protection faults when hardware
issues are the cause, whether or not replacing the cable
will fix the problem remains to be seen.

It could be a bad hard drive, hard drive controller, or a
kernel module interacting with some other hardware.

Hopefully, replacing the 40 wire cable with an 80 wire cable
will be all that's needed, but until that's tested, there's
no way to know.
