The answer has to be to make the moderators' job as easy as possible.
 Mailman has tools that will help, too.

As I said, I get email alerts when new files arrive in the mod queue.
 If they are obviously spam there is no hurry, and I don't necessarily
do anything the same day.  If I see one that is genuine, I log in,
deal with that and drop the rest (drop, not bounce).  If no genuine
ones arrive I go in once a week or so and drop the spam.

A lot of spam moderation is avoidable, too.  There are certain
addresses that bulk-mail fairly often, and they can be added to an
automatic-drop list.  Similarly, names known from another list to be
useful can be added to an automatic accept list.

FWIW, I could handle one more mod queue, if it helps.
