I just rebooted mine into Cauldron as a test.  At the Cauldron
bootloader screen, I selected "failsafe."

Everything booted OK and I got a prompt saying "Welcome to rescue
mode."  I don't know if that is the normal result
for single user, but a few lines above, it said it was "Reconfiguring at
administrator request," and called a single user config.    It would
seem that your problem doesn't arise for everybody (Wouldn't it!)
