Thanks to everyone for their help.  I'm still puzzled as to why the
problem started, but since it has gone away I'll live with that and
hope that at some point the penny drops :-)

I'm inclined to follow Juergen's advice and create a movemail account,
though, just in case.... During well over 10 years of using KMail and
Thunderbird I've never needed to, but it can't harm, and might pick up
some things otherwise missed.
