Hi Michael!

I am Rémi (Akien on IRC) and am in charge of the French translation
team. Welcome to the i18n translation team!
If you have yet not done so, I would ask you to also join the i18n-fr
mailing list[1] which is our internal means of communication (in
French).

Could you tell me what is the username you registered (or will
register) on identity.mageia.org? I need it to add you to the
translators group on our authentification system (though for now it is
no longer used, it will probably be in the future).

We have several things to translate in Mageia, and many of those are
quite advanced with regards to the French locale, but more work is
coming:

1. The software: all the French translations can be found on our
SVN[2], using the po/gettext system. Are you familiar with it? We used
to have an online translation software during the development of
Mageia 2 but it is now kind of broken, and we are still discussing its
potential replacement. For now we stick to the good ol' SVN. I'd say
that the French translation is 99% done, there were a few changes
recently that may not have been looked into yet.

2. The website: for Mageia's website[3], we use a system similar to
the po/gettext system but relying on .lang files. There are still
parts of the website that can't yet be localised, but we can't do much
about it in the i18n team (though if you know about PHP and web design
you might want to join us in the Atelier team[4], too, whose purpose
is to handle the website, the distribution's artwork and marketing).
We have a nice page[5] coded by the Atelier team leader rda that shows
the status of the translations for the available resources. At the
moment the French translation is 100% done (but that doesn't mean it
is exempt of mistakes).

3. The blog: for the French translation team, Mageia's blog[6] is the
part that gives us the most translation work, since new articles are
posted regularly. It's not too much work, though, and you will see on
our mailing list how we handle new blog posts (collaborative
translation and proofreading in an Etherpad, and then one of the few
members with an account on Mageia's French blog can post it).

4. The documentation: Mageia's official documentation[7] is still a
work in progress on the English content, but some French translators
are nevertheless already translating part of this content. If you are
interested in joining them you could ask for more info on our mailing
list.

5. The wiki: we have been talking about a localised wiki for a long
time, but it's still to be released. Though, I personally think that
the content of the English wiki[8] could use more work before being
translated, but that's another issue.

Feel free to ask any questions you may have, here in English or on the
i18n-fr mailing list in French.

Regards,
Rémi / Akien
