I've never had that problem using pop access on gmail for mailing lists.
(I haven't used gmail for mageia lists, but for a number of other lists.)
It might be something in your gmail setup.  (There are a lot of options.)
I've never tried using imap, but if you are using imap, it isn't hard to 
change to pop.

Depending how the user agent is configured, email can be left on the 
server with pop access, just like the imap default.  (Which I do when 
travelling.)
