I played some more. My printer is now working. At least I was able to 
print a test page. However when I turned the printer off mageia still 
tried to reboot but stalled. I got a black screen with a lot of nrs, 
ltrs and symbols. I had to do a manual reboot.  Print ass't was present 
in gwenview. I did not try it yet because I need to import the samples I 
used before. I am going to try the minimum install as you suggested, and 
then try gwenview.
