My only other thought was to create a new profile.  I have done this
with Mozilla.  The procedure for Thunderbird should be much the same,
and will be on the Thunderbird page at mozilla.org.  It should get rid
of any permission problems.  Since you may have it solved anyway, you
probably don't need to take that step.
